The three original Doom games are now available on all major gaming platforms, including PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Android, and IOS. But most players aren’t happy, especially the old timers, because back when Doom came out in the early 90s, creating and logging in to a Bethesda account was not a requirement.
For those unaware, to play the new classic Doom games, all players must login to a Bethesda account before being able to access the games. For example, to play Doom and Doom II, fans have to login just once, while Doom 3 requires players to log in every time they want to play to unlock all the available features, as well as all the available content.
However, with the advent of the internet and online gaming, logins are expected. In this case, the Bethesda.net login was a requirement to “reward Slayers Club members for playing the classic Doom games.”
But some fans argue that the classic Doom games offer an offline experience, so the Bethesda login is in reality an unexpected requirement. Countless gamers have taken to Twitter to vent their frustrations, and in the process they’ve come up with memes mocking the login message.
Bethesda has taken the backlash to heart and has announced that it is working on changing the requirement to be optional.
“Update on our new classic DOOM releases: The login should be optional, and we are working on changing the requirement to optional now,” the company said in a tweet.
